Recognising voluntary service of retired councillors
At an extraordinary meeting of the Council held on 20th May 2025, it was unanimously resolved to confer upon former councillor Mr Keith Ward the title of Honorary Freeman for his emanant services rendered to the Parish. At the meeting, The Chairman opened the debate and spoke about how the work of the Council depends on people who are willing to step forward and give their time and effort for the benefit of others. The Chairman said he felt especially proud to award the title of Honorary Freeman to Mr. Ward in recognition of the many years he has devoted to Willaston and the Council. He stated that it is the highest honour local government can give to an individual and it reflects just how much Mr. Ward’s hard work and commitment have meant to the Parish since he was first elected in 2008.The Chairman also spoken of Mr. Ward’s genuine willingness to listen to others and work together for the good of the community.
The Vice-Chairman spoke about how Mr. Ward didn’t stand for election in 2011 in order to allow new members to join the Council. Cllr. Bailey also paid tribute to Mr. Ward’s appreciation of effective and timely debates, and how he valued Mr. Ward’s respectful approach with this when he was Chairman of the Council.
Also at the same meeting a Certificate of Meritorious Service was presented to Mr Nigel Lane who also recently retired from being a local councillor. The Chairman thanked Mr. Lane for his long-standing dedication to the community and his work on behalf of the Council, including his contributions as a parish councillor and as a Playing Field Officer.
The Vice-Chairman spoke about Mr. Lane’s work in researching planning applications and making proposals to the Council on responding to consultations. She also made reference to Mr. Lane’s sense of humor and how it enriched debates. Cllr Bailey spoke about Mr. Lane’s lasting contributions in leading on street furniture projects including replacement benches around the Parish and the restoration of the fingerpost.
